Engineer Abiye H. Membere is the former Group Executive Director for Exploration & Production at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).


His key responsibilities spam across repositioning and setting strategic direction of the Upstream Exploration and Production activities of the Corporation and its partners. He joined Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 2005 as the General Manager, PSC/FES, National Petroleum Investment Management Systems, NAPIMS and later moved to become the General Manager, Projects, Engineering and Technical Division, ETD in 2007. He became the Executive Director of Operations in Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (a subsidiary of NNPC) in 2008, a position he occupied until 2010 when he was appointed the Managing Director of the Company (NPDC).

He started his amazing career as a Wellsite Petroleum Engineer with SPDC of Nigeria in 1987. Subsequently, he joined Baroid Nigeria Limited in 1990 where he rose to the position of Senior Sales Representative. Engr. Membere joined ExxonMobil in 1993 and excelled at different positions like Senior Reservoir Engineer, Team Lead for East (Ubit) and Oso Areas, Technical Lead ExxonMobil merger and Supervisor Development Planning. He also worked in Mobil North Sea in 2000 where he held positions like Team Lead Beryl Alpha and Bravo, Southern North Sea (Gas) etc. He returned to ExxonMobil Nigeria as Gas Production Advisor responsible for Gas Master Plan, LNG/IPP and Gas Flare Elimination Projects.

In the course of his exciting career, he has attended various managerial and leadership training courses in Havard Executive programs in Boston; Ross Business School in Michigan and IMD in Switzerland in addition to technical and professional trainings. As part of his achievements during his career; Engr. Membere has won several awards like; Emerging Leader ExxonMobil (1997), Safety Award, Mobil North Sea (2002). He was the SPE Nigerian Council Chairman in 2008, a member of Nigerian Society of Engineers, COREN; a member of the Advisory Board of Nelson Mandela African University of Science and Technology (AUST); member of Board of Trustees (BOT) Society of Petroleum Engineers; SPE Nigeria Council and Board member Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (B. Eng.) in Petroleum Engineering and a Master Degree in Reservoir Engineering with special interest in Transient Well Test Analysis from the University of Port Harcourt. He is a Panalpina World Transport Company and University of Port Harcourt Scholar at secondary and post graduate education levels respectively.

He is a philanthropist, whose major focus is improving standards of education, health, reducing unemployment through job creation and clean environment within and outside his immediate communities. In furtherance of these objectives, Engr. Membere has setup the Ibiwari Foundation, a Non-Profit Organization designed to strengthen and achieve these goals.
